Family Holiday Portraits

Saturday, November 7 & 14,  2 – 6 p.m., $150.  Call now to register as time slots will fill!
Family Holiday Portraits continue to be a favorite each year and make the perfect Holiday gift.  Outstanding professional photographer, Michael Keel, will be setting up his studio at Gumbo!  Each half-hour session will provide approximately 30 – 36 different color photographs and a 4×6 print of each, and may include portraits of the family, individual children, and combinations thereof.   Enlargements of various sizes and multiple copies of selected shots, or a CD may be ordered from the photographer at standard rates along with packages. Composites of previous family portraits are available.  You may also visit for additional samples of Michael Keel’s work.  Call Gumbo or e-mail to register or receive composites.

Infant and Child CPR & Safety

Specializing in pediatrics for twenty-three years, and Certified American Heart Association CPR Instructor.
Sunday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. $75, $50 for partner or caregiver also attending.

This class will cover all aspects of CPR for Infants and Children along with infant and child choking including hands-on instruction with a mannequin.   Over the course of the past 13 years, Debra Scaccia has become a safety expert in the field of pediatrics. She emphasizes the importance of prevention and therefore will include information on preventive measures and baby/child proofing the home as well as travel safety. You may bring your baby if not yet mobile.

Making Informed Decisions on Vaccination Support Group

with “New Yorkers for Vaccination Information and Choice”
Sunday, November 1, 4-5:30 PM, $10, Space limited, reservations required.
NYVIC is dedicated to providing information and support to families and individuals who are seeking to make informed choices regarding vaccination.  This is a forum for those who would like to learn from others who have “been there” before you and now support your right to choose.  Bring your questions and concerns, you are not alone when facing difficult health decisions.  Infants welcome if not mobile.

Kids Make Music with Bonga

Saturday, Nov. 7, 11:30 a.m.- 12:15 p.m. $18 per child/adults free (siblings $2.)  Call to reserve.
Bonga comes to Gumbo with his bag of percussion toys for children, from infants on up, to make their own music.  Using percussion instruments such as handmade drums; tcha-tchas, and wooden blocks, Bonga leads a rhythm workshop for all to tune into and enjoy their own rhythm and voice.   Appropriate for children of all ages.

Rolie Polie Guacamole

ROCK AND ROLLS SING AND DANCES with local creative children’s band, Rolie Polie Guacamole.  The latest hit on the Brooklyn children’s band scene, Frank Gallo and Andrew Tuzhilin of Rolie Polie will engage you and your children with songs from their newly release CD along with all-time familiar favorites, including books like “Brown Bear.”  Come shake those shakers and swing those hips!

African Dance for Children

Wednesdays, 3:45 – 4:30 p.m., 4-week series, $60,  Drop-in $18. (Discount for siblings.)  Ongoing.
Recommended for children 3-7, this class promises to be fun-filled while providing a strong base in dance and movement.  The class will include a warm-up,  traditional African movement and steps, the learning of African songs and their meanings, and development of a routine.   Call to reserve.
Alisha Zebulon-Sow is an accomplished African dancer, teacher, singer and recording artist.  She has performed with dance companies  Maimouna Keita, Djoniba Dance Ensemble, Ballet Bagata and Ballet Bougaraboo. As a singer and dancer she has collaborated with jazz greats such as Lester Bowie, tap dancer Savion Glover, world musicians Vieux Diop, Kasse Mady, Emilene Michelle and Papa Jube. She performs with Heritage O.P. and is presently performing  with Bonga and the Voudou Drums of Haiti.  She teaches extensively throughout New York City.

Baby Fingers – Sign Language and Music Classes

Music for Aardvarks & Other Mammals

Breastfeeding Support Group

For thousands of years, mothers have breastfed in “women’s circles”, benefiting from the vast experience and knowledge of others. There are often vast differences between babies raised on breastmilk and those who are not.  Being part of a group that shares the joys, concerns and challenges of breastfeeding can be both powerful and tremendously rewarding.  Brown bag your lunch, nurse and snuggle with your baby.  An opportunity to meet other new Moms and quided by Andrea Syms-Brown, explore the joy, and unravel the mysteries of breastfeeding and Mothering in modern times.
Andrea Syms-Brown is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.  A native of Trinidad and Tabago, she is well-established in New York having worked as a independent Newborn Care Specialist/Educator as well as a Certified Infant Massage Instructor.  She is Dir. of Education on the NY Lactation Consultant’s Association Board of Directors and founder of Baby in the Family which provides support and education to families in New York City and the Tri State area.

For Adults

Conversational Spanish for Adults (Adv. Beg.)

4 weeks, Beg. Nov. 9, Mondays, 6:45 – 8:00, $120.
This is a four-week session course for adults oriented to building the basic skills to communicate in Spanish. The classes will help students to develop their communicational, receptive (listening and reading) and active (writing and speaking) abilities. After completing this courses students will be able to maintain a basic conversation in Spanish.
The course will be taught by Marianela Fernandez. Originally from Argentina, where she taught Philosophy at the National University of Cordoba, she moved to NYC in 2001 and since then has been teaching Spanish to children and adults. Currently she is a Spanish teacher at the renown Montessori school “City and Country”.

Crochet Circle/Workshop

All skill levels are welcome even if you have never touched a hook, want to learn how to read a pattern, or customize your own garments and projects. Kim will instruct and assist you in a very one-on-one format on the project of your choice and will provide a variety of small projects for beginners to help you develop your skills.  More advanced students may bring a project to class or work with Kim in finding a new project and mastering more complex stitches and patterns.  Experienced knitters may get assistance with their projects as well.  Through the years students have had great fun at Gumbo learning while enjoying the company of others.  (Moms may bring babies not yet mobile.)
Kim Kotary is a Certified Instructor with the Craft Yarn Council of America. She received her M.A. from Fashion Institute of Technology in costume and textile conservation. Kim has worked with Lion Brand Yarn Co., Caron International, NY based fashion designers anda variety of  publishers in the development of designs and patterns. Her work has been published in Crochet!, Crochet Today, Vogue Knitting, Family Circle Easy Crochet and several books from Leisure Arts and Lion Brand. She is a member of the Crochet Guild of America and the New York City Crochet Guild.

Learn the basics of sewing, how a machine works, following a pattern and sewing techniques.  In these three weeks you will be quided in the completion of a simple child’s dress, pants, hat or shoes from a pattern and will be well versed in the techniques that will enable you to move on to other projects on your own.  Students should have their own sewing machines to work on at home.
